From Sønderborg to Barcelos via the second tier of Danish football

Andreas Lausen’s route to the Primeira Liga doesn’t pass through any of the usual Danish waypoints. No Superliga minutes, no FC København or FC Midtjylland academy badge, no Brøndby loan. He got here through Sønderborg, Fredericia and Esbjerg, a path that runs through the lower tiers of Danish football and, for a stretch, through genuine institutional collapse.

Lausen grew up in FC Sønderborg’s youth setup before joining Esbjerg fB’s academy in 2019, aged 16. He spent two years in Esbjerg’s U19S, then left for FC Fredericia in the summer of 2021. The timing mattered. Esbjerg were about to implode.

That 2021-22 season in the 1st Division was as chaotic as any in Danish football. Peter Hyballa resigned after six weeks. His replacement, Roland Vrabec, lasted until March. Michael Kryger took over and resigned a month later. Esbjerg went through three permanent managers and a caretaker manager in a single campaign, finished bottom, and were relegated to the 2nd Division.

Lausen, by then 18, was probably better off elsewhere. At Fredericia he got what he needed: senior minutes. The first season was limited – 19 appearances, a young midfielder finding his feet in a first-division side.

Now, Lausen is a key player for Gil Vicente in the Primeira Liga.
