After a winless streak of six matches, Hibernians returned to winning ways as they defeated Birzebbuga St. Peter’s 1-0 in the VBET Malta Premier Opening Round league phase at the Tony Bezzina Stadium on Sunday.

The Paolites’ victory puts them back in ninth place, one point ahead of Zabbar St. Patrick, one behind Balzan and Birkirkara, and two behind Sliema Wanderers. Birzebbuga, on the other hand, remain anchored at the bottom of the table with a seventh defeat in eight matches.

The all-important goal for Hibernians came on 69 minutes when Mouad El Fanis converted a penalty after referee Daniel Portelli ordered it following a foul by Zachary Scerri on Joseph Mbong inside the area. This was after Birzebbuga were initially awarded a penalty, but it was reversed following an FVS review.

Birzebbuga’s hopes of equalizing were dashed when they were denied another penalty in stoppage time, with referee Portelli reversing his decision once again following an FVS review. The Saints’ frustration was evident as they struggled to find their footing throughout the match.

Hibernians’ win is a much-needed boost for the team, and they will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming matches. Birzebbuga, on the other hand, must regroup and find a way to turn their season around.
