Pep Guardiola is on the verge of another Premier League title with Manchester City. His side take on Chelsea in the Champions League final at the end of this month. A win in that final will be his third success in that competition. Is the Spaniard one of the best managers ever?
A good playing career is often a very helpful prelude to a successful managerial career. Guardiola played for Barcelona and won the European Cup with them in 1992. He won four La Liga titles in a row with them and played 47 internationals for Spain.
After his retirement, Guardiola became the coach of Barcelona B and of course won the Tecera division championship. In 2008 he was promoted to the head coach of the Barcelona La Liga side. His first season saw Barcelona win La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. A managerial legend had been born and he was the youngest manager to win the Champions League.
By the time Guardiola left the club in 2012, he’d won 14 competitions with Barcelona. The year before he’d been named the FIFA World Coach of the Year.
Guardiola took some time off, he probably needed it after lifting all those trophies. He made his return at Bayern Munich in 2013. No Champions League successes but he led his team to the Bundesliga title, a European Super Cup and the World Club Cup.
Betting on Guardiola’s teams can often bring profits. Whether you are new to gambling or a veteran, visiting a site such as sportsbettinguide.com will give helpful advice on how to bet on sports.
2016 saw him take over at English Premier League side Manchester City. No trophy was won in his first season but the Premier League and the EFL Cup were won in 2017/18. Guardiola went one better the following season winning a domestic treble. That didn’t stop him going out and buying more players, taking the value of the City squad to over £1 billion.
Plenty more success has followed, and this season has already seen them win the EFL Cup (for the fourth year in a row) and the Premier League title is almost won. This could well be the season that he finally wins the Champions League with Manchester City.
Yes, Pepe Guardiola is a great manager, but he is yet to join a club that has already been successful and can spend millions in the transfer market. It’s almost like playing Fantasy Football but for real. It would be fascinating to see just how he would get on at a club that can’t afford to go out and spend millions on players time after time after time.
A recent City game saw Sterling, Aguero and Jesus on the bench. Managing isn’t too hard when you can afford to do that. What will Guardiola do when he finally leaves City? How about managing Spain, no transfers there though, so it would be a massive challenge for him.
