In English football, there are few accomplishments more prestigious than winning promotion to the Premier League. The top tier of English football is widely considered to be the most competitive and lucrative league in the world, and every year, several teams from the lower divisions set their sights on achieving this feat. The sheer impact of the English league can be seen with the amount of fans it attracts from around the world. Even this list of new betting sites shows that international bookmakers rank the EPL as the main event of the betting calendar. In this blog, we'll take a closer look at how teams like Burnley, Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers and others are positioning themselves for promotion to the Premier League.
Burnley FC:
Burnley is no stranger to promotion and relegation battles. The Clarets have bounced between the top two tiers of English football for most of their history, with their most recent promotion coming in 2016. Burnley has always prided itself on being a team that is difficult to beat, and this season is no different. They have maintained a solid defensive record and are currently sitting at the very top of the table in the Championship. Burnley is undoubtedly in a fantastic position to get automatic promotion this season, as they sit on 77 points from 35 matches played and only losing 2 of those matches. They’re actively looking to break the current points record in a single championship season, which is currently held by Reading in the 2005-06 season, where they got 106 points. Burnley currently need 30 points from a possible 33 to break the record.
Sheffield United FC:
Sheffield United is a team that has a long and storied history, having won four top-flight titles and one FA Cup. However, they have spent much of the last few decades bouncing between the Championship and League One. After being relegated from the Premier League in the 2019-20 season, Sheffield United are looking to bounce back to the top flight as soon as possible. The Blades have a talented squad and a manager with a proven track record of success at this level, so they are definitely one of the favorites for promotion this season. They currently sit in second place, 13 points off the top, which would mean automatic qualification to the premier league and wouldn’t need to play in the playoffs. However, they’re only 4 points in front of Middlesborough who sit in third place and are pursuing Sheffield United for that automatic qualification spot. Sheffield United will need to maintain their current results and not let the pressure get to them, so they can finish in second place.
Middlesbrough FC:
Middlesbrough is another team that has spent much of its recent history in the top two tiers of English football. They were last promoted to the Premier League in 2016 but were relegated after just one season. This season, Middlesbrough has started well, with ex Manchester United legend Michael Carrick’s side picking up some impressive results. The Teesside club has one of the most in-form managers in the league, and if they can maintain their momentum, they will certainly be in the mix for promotion come the end of the season.
Blackburn Rovers
Blackburn Rovers have a rich history, having won the Premier League in 1995. However, the club has struggled in recent years and is currently playing in the Championship. Blackburn's manager, Jon Dahl Tomasson, has only been with the club since June 2022 and has helped to steady the ship. The team's main strength is their attacking prowess, with top scorer Ben Brereton Diaz. Blackburn are currently sitting in the middle of the play-off places, but are by no means safe. There are only 9 points separating third and ninth place, where positions third - sixth get into the play-offs, so every club will be very eager to get to those places, and Blackburn will definitely need to maintain their form if they want to continue where they are. The club will need to continue to build on their success if they want to get promoted back to the Premier League.
Luton Town
Luton Town has a passionate fan base and has been slowly climbing up the ranks in recent years. The club's manager, Rob Edwards was appointed Luton’s manager in November of 2022, after legendary manager Nathan Jones left to move to the Premier League. Luton's main strength is their team spirit, with every player fighting for each other on the pitch. If Luton can continue to build on their momentum, they could surprise a few people and get promoted to the Premier League, as they currently sit in fifth place.
Getting promoted to the Premier League is a challenging task, but Burnley, Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, Blackburn Rovers, Luton Town, and even others lower down in the table all have the potential to make it happen. Each team has their strengths and weaknesses, but they all share a common goal - to get to the top-flight. Only time will tell which of these teams will make it, but one thing is for sure - it will be an exciting race to the finish.
